Toolbox and Workspace - The Sims 1 Modding Info
[ Return to The Sims 1 Modding Info Index ]
A variety of tools are available for creating mods for The Sims 1. Here is a list of tools I use to create skins:
Blender 4.x
( currently have 4.3.2 installed in my modding workspace. )
TS1-Blender-IO
( plugin for Blender. )
FarOut
( for extracting assets from .FAR files. )
CMX Maker
( for creating .CMX files. )
Sims-Skin-Renamer
( for renaming skins for use as alternate outfits. )
Geany
( any text editor will work. For editing .CMX and .SKN files. )
GNU Image Manipulation Program
( often referred to as GIMP or GNUIMP. Any image editor that can create and edit 8-bit .BMP files will work. )
Photoshop 6
( another image editor for editing .BMP files. )
SKN2OBJ
( I no longer use this, the tool I was using before TS1-Blender-IO to convert meshes to .SKN format. )
Wings3D
( I no longer use this. .OBJ files exported from Blender were not compatible with SKN2OBJ, so I used this to re-export them. )
Many of the tools listed above have been archived and can be found in various online spaces for download, some links to these tools can be found at my [ The Sims links page. ]
I use a Linux operating system, so most of these tools I have installed onto a Windows XP virtual machine. It might be possible to run them through Wine, but I haven’t tested that yet. I have heard most of these tools still work on modern Windows operating systems.
You may need to install missing .DLL files when using some of these tools.
